Recieved a note this morning from the CASPAR team. CASPAR is a European group, funded to drive forward work towards "Cultural, Artistic and Scientific knowledge for Preservation, Access and Retrieval". The note summarizes their efforts:
The CASPAR team would like to wish you a joyful Holiday Season!
This past year, the CASPAR Consortium has set in motion an exciting challenge that will require a great amount of cooperation and dedication. Long term digital preservation requires a commitment to advancing state of the art technology, a comprehension of the social dynamics of digital information, and an ability to foresee future developments and trends. With the support of its Community, the CASPAR Project will work to guarantee mankind access to the world’s digital information for generations to come.
The CASPAR team wishes you a Holiday Greeting as we are looking forward to working with you in 2007 and beyond!
I’d recommend checking out their site. Below is an overview of their model.

CASPAR – Cultural, Artistic and Scientific knowledge for Preservation, Access and Retrieval
They are just getting some momentum and are showing admirable efforts. So, why limit it to Cultural/Artistic/Scientific knowledge? To me – information is information. They acknowledge taking things down to the bit level. So, the same issues occur with Personal, Business, Health. …related information too! We’ll all benefit from the work they are performing.
